telling me how lucky I was to be alive. One nurse said someone up there must really love you; and of course I knew that was true because I have always believed in the Lord. But at that moment in time, I felt as though I was falling apart at the seams.
After being released from the hospital, in only a hospital gown and a pair of slippers; I went home to find my apartment was a crime scene, and I could not enter. I was devastated and felt totally lost, but as if in a dream or a miracle I was not willing to accept or understand; everyone kept giving me the telephone number to Pastor Dave McFann who was running a program called the Good Samaritan Program. I had no idea how this applied to me, and felt this was not what I needed. I was living in a state of self-pity. I could not understand why I was still here…I had no use of my right hand and could do very little with my uncoordinated left hand. I was at a point of giving up when I finally decided to call the Samaritan Program. From the second I dialed the number, I began to feel love from the very warm and compassionate voice that answered the telephone and asked me to come in immediately to see him.
I was so nervous as I traveled across town. It was snowing and I had to travel about 15 miles, but upon my arrival it seemed as though I stood before God’s Welcoming Committee. The focus was never on my injuries, but on my heart and soul. Pastor Dave helped me see and find God’s love for me. I began to see that I was NOT alone and that I had purpose. I must say I was overwhelmed; I didn’t feel I was totally deserving of all the love and kindness I was receiving. Pastor Dave never gave up on me. He invited me to attend church, but never forced the issue. He allowed me to regain my sense of self-worth by encouraging me to get involved and volunteer to help others. I did begin to attend church and as I began to grow in the Lord and help others; I was no longer ashamed of my disabilities and the horrifying scars.
Pastor Dave and his staff gave me a sense of self-worth again; and in so doing, I stepped out to seek further education to help me grow and begin the healing process in my life. My journey has taken me all the way to a new life. I am now CEO and Founder of “It Can Happen Women’s Empowerment Group.” Pastor Dave still continues to stand by my side as my Pastor, my FRIEND, and MENTOR. |
